Google is going to churn Chrome updates faster
Jul 24th
Google is not satisfied with the speed at with it’s browser Chrome is being updated now… so it is further increasing the speed of at with Chrome would be updated. Google is going to release a stable version of chrome every six week. With this the version numbers and features that every version would get insignificant.
Google has given various reasons for this update –
- Shorten the release cycle and still get great features in front of users when they are ready
- Make the schedule more predictable and easier to scope
- Reduce the pressure on engineering to “make” a release
Under the old model, when we faced a deadline with an incomplete feature, we had three options, all undesirable: (1) Engineers had to rush or work overtime to complete the feature by the deadline, (2) We delayed the release to complete that feature (which affected other un-related features), or (3) The feature was disabled and had to wait approximately 3 months for the next release. With the new schedule, if a given feature is not complete, it will simply ride on the the next release train when it’s ready. Since those trains come quickly and regularly (every six weeks), there is less stress.
So is this a good think or not?? I don’t think so… Google could always release minor updates as necessary like Firefox does – 3.0.1 to 3.0.2 — instead of jumping from version 4 to 5 to 6 without any major changes or added features.
This is entirely different from what other browsers or software do… Google has asked not to read too much into the pace of version number changes…. people do care about version numbers.
Somewhere around next year you would most probably be using Google Chrome version 20 or version 25 ;D
Google Docs viewer mobile – Is it available for Symbian?
Jun 29th
Last week Google Docs got support for .doc and .docx attachments. Today mobile version of Google Docs was released for Android, iPhone and iPad only. You can now view PDFs, .ppt, .doc and .docx files you’ve uploaded to your documents list, without needing to download the file.
The feature is pretty cool and useful and it is available only on iPhone, Android and iPad. This and others features released by Google lately is available only for Google’s own Android operating system and iOS – Symbian users are left out of many of these features which makes Symbian platform unappealing. And N8 is the last Symbian N Series Smartphone. N series is the Flagship Smartphone segment of Nokia and it won’t be shipping with Symbian anymore. Symbian will be used by mid tier and low end Smartphones… that would make Symbian more unattractive in the eyes of premium customers and developers. So what about Symbian 4 – we have no idea about that.
All in all the deal doesn’t seem to be sweet or even worthy and it’s no wonder Nokia hardcore fans are moving to Android and iPhone. My friend Micky Aldridge has made the decision to switch to iPhone… read his announcement and reasons for switching here, and his views on the upcoming Nokia devices is also a great read.
So tell me guys, do you still have faith in Nokia/Symbian or are you switching to other platforms?
Yahoo: “Google you suck”
May 8th
Yahoo has launched a new $85 million ad campaign, to promote Yahoo as the single destination for all your online needs. According to them Yahoo is all Your favourite stuff in one place. and their target is Google.
The ad from the campaign, embedded above, starts by showing a site much like Google, consisting of a search box and little else. When you look at this homepage, the ad claims, “nothing looks back at you. You come to this place so you can leave.”
“At Yahoo, we have a different idea. Your homepage isn’t blank, or anonymous; it doesn’t hustle you out the door. It’s a place that gets to know you, a place that finds things for you, a place that surprises you, a place you wanna stay,” the ad continues.
Is this going to change anything.. I don’t think so, people are not going to stop using Google just because of this ad, they are so much used to Google to even switch to Bing.
Do you use Yahoo or are you a Google guy?
