Book one of the Mistborn Trilogy – Mistborn: The Final Empire was awesome. Book two – The Well of Ascension was a little dull. With the final book of Mistborn Trilogy – Hero of Ages, Brandon Sanderson had a lot to take care of. Not only he had to answer all the questions raised in the previous book, he also had to pen a perfect ending to the trilogy. After reading Hero of Ages, I have to say, Brandon Sanderson has totally delivered.
As usual this review contains spoilers from previous book so please don’t read it unless you have read the previous two books. I am going to keep the spoilers of the Hero of Ages to a bare minimum so as not to ruin your reading experience.
Vin, believing herself to be the Hero of Ages, taps the power of Well of Ascension and gives it up, thereby releasing a very evil thing which was imprisoned there. If you thought things were bad in the previous book they have gotten even worse and the world is at the verge of collapse. Elend Venture is now a powerful mistborn after eating the nugget at the Well of Ascension. He is now the Lord Emperor and is working hard to protect his people. He still is conflicted but doesn’t let it affect him. The Inquisitors are getting more powerful, the Kloss are growing in numbers. The mists have started coming out in day too. There are frequent earthquakes. The ash is falling more and more burying everything. Both Elend and Vin are still after the Atium, even though it is not as precious as it once was. There is no real siege like the last book and the story is fast paced. You knew about alomancy and Feruchemy, now you get to know about Hemalurgy. How the mists have originated. What were Lord Ruler’s motivations etc. It ties up all the loose ends.
Skip this next paragraph if you don’t want spoilers —-
Marsh does play a significant role in the end but in the end too, he is bad guy who seems to have lost all his personality. Vin is used by Preservation, she sort of becomes a god. Lord Ruler had been a good guy, tainted by Ruin. Whatever he did was to protect people from ultimate destruction. The way he ruled over people was bad because Ruin influenced and misguided him. Ruin had been playing this game for a very long time; he is subtle and had influenced everyone to achieve his goal. The mists had always been good, even when they were killing people and making them sick. Vin’s fight with Inquisitors is awesome, it was perhaps the best fight of the whole trilogy.
….. okay… I am stopping myself now. End of spoiler.
The ending is bittersweet. The sky turns blue, the plants turn green, the sun becomes yellow and plants grow. Mare’s dream finally does come true.
This is definitely a must read book. It is awesome. I was enthralled by it and I couldn’t put it down until I had reached the last page. I forgot about my dinner and even the new awesome game I had installed on my computer. This is the effect a good book should have on people.
My Rating- 5/5 – Favourite.
