The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly is a fascinating book. It got my attention because of the movie. As soon as I saw that the movie was receiving great reviews, I ordered the book from flipkart and made a decision to read the book before I watched the movie so that the pleasure of reading it would not be lost on me. The book gets a slow start where are the characters are properly placed, explained and developed. Things start to pick  up and the pace starts to increase after the first 200 pages. Then is a thrill ride with unexpected twists and turns. The mystery and the plot are brilliant. The characters are sharply drawn and engaging. Definitely recommended.

Rating – 4 out of 5.

Totally disagree- I also got the book due to wanting to see the movie. The start is appallingly paced- not knowing if it wants to be a critique of the American legal system or a popcorn thriler. It briefly picks up pace when it seems as though the main plot line is appearing but Conelly decides to spend far too much time giving the reader useless information about who Haller has bought a sodding iPod for. Around about 3/4 in and I was actually starting to like events as the court case began but the ending is so ridiculous- feeling very TV thriller movie of the week- that I now don’t want to bother with the film. Utterly below average and 4/10 at a very push. The above comments sum it up- the pace picks up after 200 pages- well that’s exactly what I want in a ‘thriller’. The characters are not sharply drawn at all- they are stereotypical (the cop who doesn’t like lawyers- the angry and strict judge- the hard done to ex wife) or utterly confusing (Is Haller a hard man? Is he without morals? Does he learn something? Do I care?) I’m going to read some Dennis Lehane or Hard Case Crime to try and wipe this utterly boring narrative out of my mind for good.

Man. you really did not like this book. I found it quite entertaining. Lot of people do not share your view because it was on the New York Times bestseller list for quite sometime. And by the way – the movie has got great ratings and good reviews – it has a fast pace and when you watch the movie after reading the book – it feels rushed. They have changed the ending too. But still the movie is quite good and you should watch it.

I will try the film as I honestly believe that you need to see, watch, hear something before you can form an opinion. I know I’m in the minority here but to be honest I don’t judge the worth of a book by how long it has been on a bestseller list. If popularity was a determiner on worth then surely the Wayan brothers should have won an Oscar by now for their ‘Scary Movies’- and while I’m on it- aren’t people flocking to see Transformers 3?

By the way- just checked out your thoughts on Lost final- weird reading it now. I’m right there with you. It is one of the greatest pieces of storytelling in any medium and I loved the ending!

you do have a point there. It might not be accurate to judge the worth of the book by looking the time it was on bestseller list. But the opinions and reviews of people is worth considering. And most of the reviews I read about the book were positive.

Glad we are on the same page on that.
