(Bartimaeus) "I wanted to wake you straightaway, but I knew I had to wait several hours to ensure you were safely recovered."
(Nathaniel) "What! How long has it been?"
(Bartimaeus) "Five minutes, I got bored."
That’s Bartimaeus to you; the wisecracking djinni who retunes in The Golem’s Eye which is the sequel to The Amulet of Samarkand of The Bartimaeus Trilogy. Those who have read my review of The Amulet of Samarkand know that I was not impressed by it, just mildly entertained. But that is not with the sequel – The Golem’s Eye. This book is impressive.
Nathaniel has risen in the ranks of Government rather quickly and is looked upon favourably by Prime Minister, Devereaux. He is apprenticed to the Minister of Security, Jessica Whitwell; and is working as an understudy to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Julius Tallow. We get more information about The Resistance and Kitty Jones too; who didn’t have much role in the previous book is a major character in this book. And then there is Bartimaeus who is witty and has grown funnier is not amused when Nathaniel summons him back (once again). But they strike up an agreement to work together.
The Resistance is more active than ever and Nathaniel is in charge of finding them. But there comes another trouble which is even grave. Nathaniel’s job and future is on the line unless he delivers some solid result. Who is the mysterious character Kitty Jones is explained in this book. We get to know why she joined The Resistance and why she hates Magicians so much.
The story of this book is much more interesting than the last book. It moves at a fast pace and you won’t be bored even for a second. The magicians are still bad and Nathaniel seems to be on the way to become one of them. But we can’t be sure of that unless and until we read the last book of The Bartimaeus Trilogy – Ptolemy’s Gate – which I am going to read next.
